It is an ornamental medicinal plant. There are 1700 species in the world but 3 in Turkmenistan. The species blooms in June-July but fruits in Augost - September. Offshoots and roots of the plant are provided for medicinal purposes. The offshoots and leaves of plant contains 0,62 -0,82% of alkaloids (solasolin, solamargin, solapersmin, solasodin). The fruit contain 4,0-4,7% of carbohydrates- glucose, fructose, saccharose and 0,2-1,03% of organic acids (cirtic, malic acids), carotinoids, vitamin C and tocopherol. In traditional and folk medicine the plant is considered to be an antibacterial. In Turkmen folk medicine the roots of the plant are employed in the cure of syphilis.The offshoots are administered in infusion or decoction to treat colds, bronchits, whooping cough, bronchial asthma, sciatica, rheumatism and jaundice and skin diseases.
